New York and Washington DC. Nearby attractions include many antique
shops, Dublin’s
Pearl S. Buck house, the
Mercer Museum and
Fonthill Museum, home of the Moravian Tile Works in Doylestown,
historic
Bethlehem and the art galleries and delightful boutiques of New
Hope.
The
area offers a broad range of attractions. Quakertown has several
fine antique shops within easy reach. An easy 20 minute drive south
takes you to Doylestown, the county seat, with many fine old homes
in a wide range of architectural styles. It is also home to the
Moravian Tile Works, and the Mercer Museum – one of America’s best
collections of early Americana, where fire engines, cast iron
stoves, whaling ships and blacksmithing tools illustrate the
country’s history. The
James A
Michener Art Museum is also in Doylestown, while Pearl S Buck’s
home is in nearby Dublin, and is open to visitors.
Along the nearby Delaware Valley are many lovely Colonial towns,
including New Hope, whose galleries, boutiques and cafes make for
fine browsing.
Peddler’s
Village, in nearby Lahaska, has many one of a kind shops
featuring the work of local and international artisans.
Bowman’s Hill
Wildflower Preserve, across from historic Washington Crossing,
has a lovely series of guided walks that illuminate the natural
fauna of the region. To the west,
Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary is one of America’s most important centers for
observation and research on birds of prey. Set on the edge of the
Appalachian Mountains, the Sanctuary’s densely forested hills and
dramatic lookout points are lovely for walks and bird watching.
Nockamixon State Park has horse trails, nearby stables, a large
boating lake, and extensive walking trails.
